February 2020: Global Motorsport Event Calendar

The 2020 Formula 1 season officially kicks off with pre-season testing in Spain, the WSBK championship gets underway in Australia and Formula E heads to Mexico and Morocco. Elsewhere, WEC returns to the USA and both the Daytona 500 and Adelaide 500 take place this month. Here’s what’s on the motorsport agenda in February 2020!

February 15: 2020 Mexico City E-Prix

The second rounds of the 2019/2020 Formula E championship is the 2020 Mexico City E-Prix on February 15.  After three different drivers have won the first three races, the fourth round of the 2019/2020 Formula E season heads to a revamped layout of the Autodromo Hermanos Rogriguez, which should really improve the spectacle.

Last year’s Mexico round was one of Formula E’s most dramatic races. Pascal Wehrlein had led much of the race, but his energy levels hit 0% just before the finish line, and Lucas di Grassi swept in to take victory at the flag. Stoffel Vandoorne arrives in Mexico as the championship leader, but the Belgian won’t be taking that for granted, given how competitive the season has been so far.

February 16: 2020 Daytona 500

NASCAR’s legendary Daytona 500 race takes place on February 16. The most prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar has been held at Daytona International Speedway in every year since 1959. Denny Hamlin, who also won in 2016, is the defending victor. A win for him this year would make him only the sixth driver to have won the race three times and the first to take consecutive wins since Sterling Marlin in 1994 and 1995.

February 19-28: 2020 Formula 1 Pre-Season Testing

The sport that never sleeps awakens from its winter slumber this month. After the teams launch their 2020 cars, Formula 1 testing begins on Wednesday February 19. With testing restricted even further this season, the teams will have just six days of on track preparations at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya before the Australian Grand Prix in March. There are always interesting stories during testing as the first storylines of the coming season begin to emerge. Who’ll have the best start to the year and head to Melbourne feeling confident of their title chances? Read a guide to pre-season testing on F1Destinations.com.

February 20-23: 2020 Adelaide 500

The Superloop Adelaide 500 takes place on the Adelaide Street Circuit on the penultimate weekend of the month. The Supercar race has been held annually since 1999 on a shortened layout of the former Grand Prix circuit, and is attended by over 200,000 fans. Tickets for this year’s event are still available.

February 22 – 23: WEC Lone Star Le Mans

The fifth round of the 2019/2020 World Endurance Championship brings the series to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The 6 Hours of Circuit of the Americas is a late replacement race for the Brazilian round, which was cancelled. Tickets for the American race went on sale in December. It’s the first time that the WEC has visited COTA in three years. It was previously held between 2013 and 2017, with Porsche’s Timo Bernhard, Mark Webber (Earl Bamber in 2017) and Brendon Hartley winning the last three events.

February 29: 2020 Marrakesh E-Prix

There are two Formula E races in February, with the 2020 Marrakesh E-Prix taking place on the final day of the month. Circuit Moulay El Hassan plays host to the event for a fourth successive year. The three previous races at the track have been won by three different drivers, with the Mahindra team winning with Felix Rosenqvist and Jerome d’Ambrosio in the last two years.

February 28-March 1: WSBK Australia

The 2020 Superbike World Championship kicks off on the final weekend of the month at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The island track near Melbourne has hosted the first round of the year since 2009. Defending champion Jonathan Rea – undefeated since 2015 – will be hoping to start the year with a win.
