Mandalika International Street Circuit

About

Located on Lombok Island in the Mandalika resort area in the West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, Mandalika International Street Circuit was officially opened by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in November 2021.

Billed as a ‘street circuit’, the track in fact bears little resemblance to a street venue. Instead, it incorporates sections of existing public roads. Construction work on the 17-turn, 4.31km venue began in 2019. The track surface had been completed by April 2021, but with missing infrastructure the venue was unable to host MotoGP until 2022.

MotoGP last visited Indonesia in 1997. The Indonesian Grand Prix, held at Sentul International Circuit, was on the calendar for only two seasons. It was dropped from the schedule in 1998 as a response to the 1997 Asian financial crisis, with Indonesia being one of the most heavily affected countries.

25 years may have passed since the premier class last visited the country, but local interest in motorcycle racing is still high. Indonesia is recognised as a key market for many manufacturers in MotoGP. With 50,000 grandstand seats, the venue has a total capacity of 110,000. World SBK was the first major racing series to visit the track. It held the final round of its 2021 season at the venue, with Jonathan Rea winning the two races in a meeting which was curtailed by poor weather conditions.

The construction of Mandalika International Street Circuit has been heavily criticised by the United Nations. In building the track, houses, water sources and religious sites were deconstructed. Local reports also suggest that local residents were evicted from their homes by force, without receiving compensation.

Pre-season testing for the upcoming MotoGP season took place at the venue in February 2022, giving the riders an early opportunity to get acquainted with the venue before the first race here.
