Miami International Autodrome

About

Miami International Autodrome is a temporary 5.4km, 19 turn circuit set out around the famous Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.

Formula 1 has enjoyed a rise in popularity in recent years, not least thanks to Netflix’s popular Drive to Survive series. Circuit of The Americas, which has hosted the United States Grand Prix since 2012, has seen crowd numbers boom in recent years, with an estimated 400,000 fans passing through the turnstiles in 2021.

F1’s popularity in the States was proven when tickets for the new Miami Grand Prix went on sale. Upon their release in October 2021, pre-sale tickets for the events sold out in just 40 minutes. Over 275,000 fans applied for tickets to the inaugural event.

Despite some local opposition, F1 has fought hard for a race in Miami, with the destination city being high on the list of Liberty Media’s priorities since their takeover of the sport in 2017. 75 circuit designs were considered, with some failed attempts to bring the race into the heart of Downtown Miami. Instead, the race has found a home in the Miami Gardens area of the city, around 25km north of the downtown district.

The addition of the Miami Grand Prix made 2022 the first season since 1984 that Formula 1 has held two races in the United States in a single season. With the addition of another American race in Las Vegas in 2023, that number grew to three in 2023. Prior to the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, F1 last raced in Florida for the 1959 United States Grand Prix, which took place at Sebring International Raceway.

The Miami Grand Prix is set to remain on the F1 calendar for at least ten years.

How to get there

Miami International Autodrome is located around 25km north of Downtown Miami.

As the circuit is located around the Hard Rock Stadium – Miami’s largest sporting venue – the venue is already well-connected by established public transport links.

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the closest airport to the circuit and is the area’s biggest airport. It’s located just a 20 minute drive from the track. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport serves many discount airlines, while the smaller Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) serves domestic routes year-round.

To get to the circuit, your best bet is to use public transport. Metrorail is the best way to get from the airport into the heart of the city, while Metrobus serves the area’s major entertainment centres. Service number 297 is the one you need to get to Hard Rock Stadium. From Earlington Heights Station, your journey should take under 20 minutes.

Reasonable prices and honest drivers make taxi services a great way of getting around the city. Ask your hotel for advice on reputable firms, or head to a taxi stand in Downtown Miami. Uber and Lyft also operate in the area.

Circuit shuttles are likely to be in operation over the race weekend; though details are yet to be announced.

Where to stay

Where are the best places to stay for the Miami Grand Prix?

It’s hard not to be drawn to Miami’s sandy beaches and world renowned nightlife. Miami Beach is the best place to experience this. Mid Beach is where you’ll find the most luxurious resorts, while South Beach is your go to for culture and tourist activities. The quieter North Beach is worth considering if you’re on a tighter budget.

The Downtown area is the best place to stay if you want to check out all Miami has to offer. Not only is it the heart of the city where you’ll find the top attractions, nightlife and shopping, it is well connected by public transport to other regions of the city. Affordable accommodation can be found in Little Havana; especially appealing if you want to sample some Cuban cuisine! While most areas of Miami are safe, we recommend not staying in Overtown and Liberty City.
